Achieving an accurate likeness is something that even experienced artists sometimes struggle with. For a beginner, difficulty in achieving an accurate likeness may be so discouraging that they lose the desire to draw. With the grid method, you’ll be able to achieve an accurate likeness every time, even if you’ve never drawn a picture before.
What is the grid method?
It’s a way to take a complex subject and break it down into more manageable pieces.
The grid method gives an artist a lot of reference points so they can be confident that they are drawing their lines in the right place. It allows you to easily see where you need to draw your lines to keep things in proportion.
There Are Some Drawbacks to the Grid Method
The grid method is not without its drawbacks however. Although the grid method makes it very easy for anyone, even a beginner, to achieve an accurate likeness, it can be a time consuming and tedious process.
If you have to draw a grid over your photo reference, and a grid on your drawing paper every time you do a drawing, it can take some of the fun out of drawing.
Erasing grid lines from your drawing is not always easy either. If you’re not very careful when creating your grid, it’s not always easy to remove the grid lines and that can ruin a drawing.
